Liberation or Looting?
Imagine your city, let's say it's New York, Sydney, London or Paris, has just endured a month of heavy bombing, with thousands of missiles raining down each day. This comes after twelve years of regular bombing, restrictive sanctions and pitiful rations that challenged your ability to nourish yourself and your family, all imposed thanks to the last time this particular clean up crew came to town.
The city is a mess. Around you homes, work buildings, television and electricity centres have turned to rubble, and thousands of your fellow citizens are dead or injured. The hospitals are full, one you know of was bombed, and the International Red Cross report that at the peak hospitals were receiving as many as 100 casualties an hour. They are running out of supplies including medication, clean water, blood and beds.
The army that invaded your country are walking around with intimidating helmets, pointing weapons at anyone who dares look in their direction. Selected military officials have taken over your governmental buildings and are discussing the future of your country. Most can't speak your language. Breathe it in. Feel it, really feel what that would be like.
According to George Bush Junior aka GB this is the picture of joyous liberation. Breathe out now with relief or remorse because unless you're reading this from downtown Baghdad (or Belgrade..or Beirut or..) it's not your city. If it was any of the major western cities it never would have been allowed to happen. And if it did, instead of calling it a war the newsmedia would be running panic coverage 24 hours a day about how an innocent city is being attacked by terrorists.
But hey, this is Iraq. A small country in the middle of the desert used to being bombed, what's another few rounds? The guy who runs it needed a message so GB decided this was the way to go. Apparently the people will understand and deep down they will be grateful someone finally took control of the situation.
If that's the case, with friends like GB who needs enemies?
